Lockheed Martin has introduced the Vectis, a new unmanned aerial platform developed by its Skunk Works division. The company describes the aircraft as a Group 5 collaborative combat system intended to enhance operational flexibility and survivability in contested environments.
The Vectis is engineered to function both independently and in coordination with manned aircraft, including the F-35 fighter jet. Lockheed Martin states that this capability allows for seamless command and control across multiple domains through shared systems such as MDCX. The goal is to provide air forces with adaptable solutions that can respond to evolving combat requirements.
Designed for a variety of missions, the platform supports electronic warfare, reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, and precision strikes. It is also intended for defensive and offensive air operations in regions including Europe, US Central Command, and the Indo-Pacific. To survive in hostile airspace, the aircraft incorporates advanced stealth shaping and high-grade materials.
Production relies on digital engineering and modern manufacturing methods to reduce costs and speed up development. The system utilizes an open architecture that meets government standards, allowing for rapid updates without heavy reliance on specific suppliers. Skunk Works is currently self-funding the project, with plans to transition from design to flight testing within two years.
The company has been promoting the Vectis internationally. A scale model was displayed at the 2026 European Defence Fair in Brussels, where Lockheed Martin presented the aircraft to the Belgian Air Force as a potential loyal wingman solution.
