The Houston Texans have made roster adjustments following injuries sustained by two players during their preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. Graham Mertz, a second-year quarterback, has been placed on the Reserve/Injured list after suffering a season-ending knee injury just before halftime of the game.
Joshua Pitsenberger, a rookie running back, also exited the contest late in the fourth quarter due to an ankle injury and is expected to miss a couple of weeks.
These roster changes were announced on August 15, as the Texans added quarterback Brett Rypien to their lineup to fill the void left by Mertz. The team is currently dealing with a number of injuries, including those affecting Ja'Marcus Ingram (shoulder), Collin Wright (soft tissue strain), Jake Hansen (ankle), Brevin Jordan (knee), Jawhar Jordan (strained hip flexor), and British Brooks (broken hand).
Despite these setbacks, head coach DeMeco Ryans noted that the Texans have managed to keep their top players healthy, with the exception of third linebacker E.J. Speed, who has been sidelined since the offseason due to a quad injury. Ryans and the coaching staff are now faced with the challenge of navigating a roster that is becoming increasingly short-handed.
As the Texans continue their training camp, further roster moves are anticipated as they address the injuries and prepare for the upcoming season. The team remains optimistic about their overall health, despite the unfortunate developments with Mertz and Pitsenberger.
