Jared Nuness, who served as an assistant coach for Baylor's basketball program for over a decade, has been issued a two-year show cause penalty by the NCAA due to violations related to sports betting. Nuness, the longest-tenured assistant under head coach Scott Drew, resigned from his position in December, citing personal health issues.

In his resignation announcement, Nuness expressed gratitude for his time at Baylor, thanking Coach Drew, the athletic department, players, and the community for their support. He emphasized the importance of focusing on his physical health, stating, "If I can't give 100% to the team, it's time to make a change."

The NCAA's investigation revealed that Nuness engaged in impermissible sports betting activities during his tenure at Baylor, specifically from December 29, 2020, to November 28, 2025. He reportedly placed around 3,400 bets totaling approximately $38,000 on professional sports. Additionally, Nuness allowed his son to use his betting accounts, resulting in three bets on college competitions totaling $170. None of these bets involved Baylor's programs.

Nuness accepted responsibility for the violations, which the NCAA classified as Level II infractions. The show cause penalty means that any institution wishing to hire Nuness during the two-year period must demonstrate that they have addressed the issues leading to the penalty.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding sports betting within college athletics, an area where the NCAA maintains strict regulations. Nuness is among several individuals who have faced sanctions for similar violations, underscoring the challenges of navigating betting policies in the current sports landscape.

Further details regarding the implications of the penalty for Nuness and his future in coaching were not provided.
