As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for the 2026 season, significant changes have been made to their defense under new coordinator Christian Parker. The team aims to improve upon last year's performance, which was marked by a low ranking, particularly in points allowed, where they were considered the worst defense in the NFL.

The safety position has seen the most notable upgrades, with only Malik Hooker and Markquese Bell returning from last season. The Cowboys have invested heavily in this area, signing Jalen Thompson as their most expensive free agent in over a decade and adding PJ Locke, who has previous experience with Parker.

Additionally, the team selected Caleb Downs with the No. 11 pick in the draft, further bolstering their safety group.

Despite these additions, Bell's status on the roster has been uncertain. He was a healthy scratch during a recent preseason game against the Cardinals, which often indicates a player is secure in their roster spot. Sports radio host Zach Wolchuk noted that Bell's absence from the game suggests he may be safe despite the competition.

However, Bell's situation is complicated by his arrest in April on charges related to possession of a controlled substance and marijuana. This incident raised questions about his future with the team, especially given the significant investment the Cowboys have made in their safety positions.

Despite these challenges, Bell has remained a respected member of the team since joining as an undrafted free agent in 2022. His versatility has been beneficial, as he filled in at linebacker during a previous season due to injuries on the team. With Parker's unconventional defensive scheme, there is potential for Bell to play a more impactful role.

Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News has projected that the Cowboys may keep five safeties on their roster, including Bell, who has shown physicality during training camp. The team continues to evaluate their options as they finalize their roster ahead of the upcoming season. Further details regarding Bell's standing with the team are not yet clear.
