The SMU Mustangs are set to enhance their wide receiver lineup with the addition of two transfers, Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina. This move follows the loss of their top two receivers, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively recorded over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in their final season before graduation.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with several key offensive players, which include tight ends Matthew Hibner and RJ Maryland, along with running backs TJ Harden and Chris Johnson Jr. Despite these setbacks, both Hale and Smith have shown promising potential to make significant contributions.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins highlighted Smith’s ability to secure contested catches thanks to his size, while he also noted Hale’s impressive speed and agility in evading defenders. Hale, a former five-star recruit, had a strong start at Alabama but was sidelined for the entire 2024 season due to a serious knee injury.
He has since regained his form at SMU, demonstrating his explosive playmaking skills.
Wide receivers coach Rob Likens praised Hale's experience in the SEC and his resilience, which he believes will enhance the team's offensive approach. Smith, who accumulated over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns during his tenure at East Carolina, is recognized for his aggressive playing style and ability to make challenging catches, fitting well with the Mustangs' focus on downfield passing.
In addition to the new transfers, senior Yamir Knight returns after being named Offensive MVP in the Holiday Bowl, and sophomore Jalen Cooper is expected to take on a larger role following a successful freshman season. With approximately two weeks remaining in fall camp before facing Florida State on September 7, the team is dedicated to developing chemistry and finalizing their depth chart.
