Baylor University's athletic director Doug McNamee has clarified expectations for head football coach Dave Aranda as he approaches his seventh season. McNamee did not specify a required win total for Aranda to retain his position beyond the 2026 season, emphasizing that success will be measured by the momentum and support around the program rather than just numbers.

In comments shared by CBS Sports college football writer Shehan Jeyarajah, McNamee stated, "It's the momentum; it's the feel, and it's the vibe around the program."

He highlighted the need for a collective effort from the Baylor community, urging fans to engage more actively, whether by attending games or providing financial support, particularly in light of the evolving landscape of name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities.

Aranda, who has a record of 36-37 at Baylor, has faced challenges since the Bears' successful 2021 season, which included a Big 12 championship and a Sugar Bowl victory. Since then, the team has struggled, finishing 5-7 in 2025 and missing a bowl game after a disappointing end to the season.

McNamee, who took over the athletic department in December, emphasized that his evaluation of Aranda's performance will be based on the overall direction and belief in the program. He remarked, "I need a story to write to make that a compelling story. The program needs to provide that."

As Baylor prepares for its season opener against Auburn on September 5, the team has made several changes, including the addition of former Florida quarterback DJ Lagway and the hiring of Joe Klanderman as defensive coordinator. McNamee's comments suggest that while the win-loss record remains important, the perception and support surrounding the football program will significantly influence Aranda's future at Baylor.
