The Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints have each been fined $500,000 by the NFL due to a brawl that occurred during their joint practice earlier this week. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported as a result of the altercation.
The NFL issued a statement emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship, particularly during joint practices, and reminded all teams of their responsibility to prevent unsportsmanlike conduct that could lead to injuries.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed his understanding of the league's strict stance on the matter but announced plans to appeal the fine. He described the penalty as "pretty stiff" and acknowledged the negative implications of the violent behavior displayed during the practice. "Taking the helmets off, swinging and hitting, that type of thing is not good for anybody," Jones stated.
If the appeal is unsuccessful, Jones indicated he would also impose fines on the players involved in the incident. Linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku was noted for ripping off the helmet of Saints offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga and throwing a punch at offensive lineman Erik McCoy.
Additionally, Saints rookie wide receiver Brock Rechsteiner was involved in the brawl, first engaging with Cowboys cornerback Caelan Carson and later performing a wrestling move known as a German suplex on Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson.
