The Dallas Cowboys are currently engaged in a competitive evaluation for the backup quarterback position behind Dak Prescott. Sam Howell and Joe Milton have both showcased their abilities during the preseason, leading to critical decisions for the team.
The Cowboys must determine who will serve as the backup quarterback and whether to retain two or three quarterbacks on the roster. Keeping three quarterbacks may necessitate cuts at other positions where the team seeks additional depth. According to USA Today's Ben Grimaldi, Howell is predicted to be released, with Milton emerging as the likely QB2.
Grimaldi noted that while Howell was initially viewed as the frontrunner, Milton's strong performances in the preseason have shifted the dynamics of the competition. Howell, who has played in 20 NFL games with 18 starts, has a one-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $2.5 million, which complicates the decision for the Cowboys.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged that Howell had previously held an advantage over Milton, but the competition has become increasingly close. "If you would just take the training camp competition, it's probably neck and neck, and Sam maybe a little bit ahead," Schottenheimer stated on August 24. Milton's recent performances have put him in a favorable position as the competition continues.
The Cowboys have until August 30 to finalize their roster, which includes deciding on the backup quarterback situation. While ESPN's Todd Archer suggests that both Howell and Milton could be retained, he indicates that Howell may still hold the edge for the backup role.
