Head Coach Neal Brown has expressed serious concerns about the offensive line of the North Texas Mean Green as preparations for the 2026 season begin. After a recent practice, he remarked on the unit's current state, indicating that they are far from meeting the team's needs, citing deficiencies in the run game and inadequate pad level.
The offensive line was pivotal in North Texas' successful 2025 season, helping the team achieve the highest number of rushing touchdowns in the nation, totaling 49, and earning recognition as the top-scoring offense. Notable players from last year included offensive guard Gabe Blair, who received First Team All-American Conference honors and was rated as the third-best guard by Pro Football Focus.
With all five starting offensive linemen having graduated, the team is now tasked with rebuilding this critical unit. Brown pointed out that only two players, senior Johnny Williams IV and fifth-year Chandler Strong, have demonstrated potential during fall camp, with Strong standing out among the group.
Brown emphasized the need to find the right mix of players, noting that the team cannot compete effectively with just two offensive linemen. He has opened all positions on the line to competition, regardless of players' scholarship status, as the coaching staff aims to create a physically dominant group in advance of their first game on September 5.
The pressure is mounting on Brown, offensive line coach Matt Mattox, and run game coordinator Mike Bloesch to enhance the offensive line's performance before the season kicks off. Brown cautioned that if the offensive line continues to perform as it has recently, the team will face significant challenges.
