Baylor University is making substantial changes to its football defense with the hiring of Joe Klanderman as the new coordinator.
Klanderman, who previously led Kansas State's defense to top rankings from 2021 to 2024, is expected to bring a new level of aggression and identity to a unit that has struggled in recent seasons, allowing an average of 30.8 points and over 399.9 yards per game.
One of the primary strategies Klanderman will implement is a 3-3-5 formation, which emphasizes versatility and aims to confuse opposing quarterbacks. This setup allows three defensive linemen to occupy blockers, freeing up linebackers to pursue plays more effectively.
Additionally, improvements in red-zone defense and third-down stop rates are anticipated. Klanderman's experience at Kansas State, where the defense excelled in these areas, is expected to translate to better performance for Baylor. The coaching staff has also brought in talent through the transfer portal, enhancing the overall capabilities of the defense.
