Wood's Defining Moment

James Wood delivered the decisive blow in a high-scoring affair, launching a four-run home run that shifted the momentum for the Washington Nationals. The blast came in the bottom of the fifth inning, propelling the home team to a 12-11 victory over the Houston Astros at Nationals Park on Monday.

Wood’s homer, which traveled 446 feet to center field, drove in Crews, Young, and Nuñez, instantly extending the Nationals' lead to 12-6. This single play accounted for four runs in the inning, proving to be the turning point in a game defined by offensive firepower from both sides.

Early Inning Swaps

The contest began with back-and-forth action. In the top of the first, Walker doubled to center to score Paredes, giving the Astros an early 1-0 advantage. Washington responded in the same frame when Mead doubled to center to bring Wood home, tying the game at 1-1.

Houston regained the lead in the second inning when Altuve homered 372 feet to left field. The three-run shot scored Shewmake and Matthews, making it 4-1 for the visitors.

The Nationals answered in the third. Diaz homered 389 feet to left to score Smith, cutting the deficit to 4-2. García Jr. then doubled to left to score Nuñez, and Mead followed with a single to left to bring Wood home, making the score 6-3. However, the Astros’ lead was short-lived. Abrams homered 392 feet to right in the same inning, scoring García Jr. and Mead to tie the game at 6-6.

Fifth-Inning Surge

Houston briefly retaken the lead in the fifth. Mead hit a 404-foot home run to left-center, followed by a sacrifice fly from Millas that scored Abrams, putting the Astros ahead 8-6. But the Nationals’ offense erupted immediately after. Wood’s four-run homer made it 12-6, effectively sealing the outcome despite Houston’s continued efforts.

Late Rally Falls Short

The Astros mounted a late comeback attempt. In the sixth, Smith scored on a groundout that resulted in a double play, making the score 12-7. In the eighth, Shewmake doubled to right to score Wade Jr., bringing the margin to 12-8. Matthews then homered 363 feet to left, scoring Diaz and Shewmake to make the final score 12-11.

Miles Mikolas earned the win for Washington, pitching six innings and allowing seven earned runs. He was supported by Cole Henry and Clayton Beeter in relief. Mike Burrows took the loss for Houston, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing seven earned runs. The attendance was 11,092. The Nationals improved to 47-45, while the Astros fell to 45-48.
