Houston Astros pitcher Hayden Wesneski secured his first career victory, improving his record to 1-0, by delivering five and two-thirds innings of relief against the Los Angeles Angels. Wesneski allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four batters and walking two.
He was supported by a bullpen effort that included Bennett Sousa pitching one and one-third scoreless innings for his fourth hold, Steven Okert working two-thirds of an inning with one earned run allowed for his fifteenth hold, and Bryan Abreu closing the game with one and one-third perfect frames to record his seventh save.
For Los Angeles, Grayson Rodriguez took the loss, falling to 0-3 after pitching five innings. He surrendered two earned runs on five hits and six strikeouts while issuing two walks. Mitch Farris struggled in relief, giving up three earned runs on two hits and three walks in one inning before being charged with the loss.
Kirby Yates pitched one inning with one earned run and three strikeouts, while Brent Suter worked two scoreless innings with one hit allowed and one strikeout.
Offensive Production
The Astros' offense was fueled by two home runs from Diaz. He launched a 425-foot shot to left-center field in the second inning, making the score 3-1 Houston. Later in the sixth inning, Smith doubled to left, driving in Diaz and Trammell to extend the lead to 5-3. Another run scored on a wild pitch by Angels pitcher Mitch Farris during that same frame.
