American Airlines has announced a fleetwide upgrade for its narrowbody aircraft, focusing on the installation of seatback entertainment screens and an expansion of premium seating options. The carrier stated that these changes are intended to provide passengers with more ways to relax and stay connected during their flights.

The airline is increasing the number of premium and Main Cabin Extra seats across its narrowbody fleet. Currently, premium seating accounts for approximately 25% of seats on narrowbody departures. American projects this figure will rise to about 40% in the coming years. This expansion will be achieved through retrofits of existing aircraft and the delivery of new planes configured with premium layouts.

Specific upgrades include adding an additional row of First Class seats to Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft. Upcoming Boeing 737 MAX 10 deliveries will feature 24 First Class seats, while the A321neo fleet will also be reconfigured to include more First Class options.

The majority of the narrowbody fleet will be retrofitted to expand Main Cabin Extra seats, offering extra legroom, earlier boarding, dedicated overhead bin space, and a complimentary beverage. The airline also noted that interiors will be refreshed with more storage, redesigned seats, and enhanced lighting.

Beginning in 2028, all new Airbus and Boeing narrowbody deliveries will include seatback screens at every seat. Retrofitted aircraft will also receive these installations. This initiative builds on the more than 140 long-haul aircraft that already feature seatback displays.

The new platform will offer large-format displays, 4K technology, and expanded content partnerships. Additional features include personalized entertainment recommendations, interactive flight maps, USB-C fast charging ports, and Bluetooth audio connectivity for personal wireless headphones.

American Airlines expects to complete the full fleet installation of the new displays by early next decade. The company described these steps as part of its ongoing investment to modernize the travel experience.

Recent enhancements have included investments in Flagship and Admirals Club lounges, featuring regionally inspired menus and expanded footprints, as well as the launch of the Provisions by Admirals Club concept at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

American Airlines Group employs about 8,900 people in Fort Worth, according to local government records.
