American Airlines intends to resume daily service between Chicago O'Hare and Tokyo Narita Airport beginning March 27, 2027. The carrier will operate the route using a Boeing 787-9 aircraft configured with 30 Flagship Business seats and 21 Premium Economy seats in each direction. This schedule is designed to coordinate with Japan Airlines for connecting flights to destinations including Bangkok, Singapore, Taipei, and Ho Chi Minh City.

The move adds significant capacity to the market just months after United Airlines announced its own entry into the same corridor. United plans to begin daily Chicago-Narita flights on October 25, 2026, utilizing a Boeing 787-8 with 28 business and 21 premium economy seats. Together, the two U.S. carriers will provide 100 premium seats per day in each direction between the cities.

American Airlines Chief Executive Robert Isom stated that the airline is proud to mark a new chapter in travel from Chicago with this service. The carrier views the route as part of a broader expansion strategy, noting it has seven new or resumed long-haul routes planned for the upcoming summer season compared to the same period last year.

The decision comes amid a crowded competitive landscape. Japan Airlines already operates daily flights from O'Hare to both Narita and Haneda airports. All Nippon Airways also serves the O'Hare-Haneda route and connects with Narita. If all announced services proceed, there could be seven daily nonstop flights between Chicago and Tokyo next spring.

Industry analysis suggests the primary challenge for American Airlines will be yield management rather than seat availability. The airline faces competition from United and its Star Alliance partners, which currently hold a larger share of seats in the air on this route. Success will depend on whether feed from Chicago and Japan Airlines' network can fill high-fare cabins without heavy discounting.

American Airlines has maintained a cautious approach to its 2026 long-haul network compared to competitors. For the current summer, the airline announced six routes to Europe and South America, including destinations such as Prague, Budapest, Athens, and Zurich. Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning Brian Znotins noted that customer demand continues to favor European travel during the summer months.

Details regarding specific ticket pricing or projected load factors for the 2027 launch were not provided in the source material.

American Airlines Group is one of Fort Worth's largest employers, with about 8,900 local employees, according to local government records.
