The reigning U.S. 800-meter champion spent Wednesday morning the way every other Northwest ISD senior did: starting the first day of school.
Cooper Lutkenhaus, 17, returned to Northwest High School in Justin this week for his senior year, according to the district's instructional calendar, which set Aug. 12 as the first day. The district's boundaries also reach into Fort Worth and southern Denton County, which makes the fastest half-miler in the country, in a real sense, a neighborhood kid.
What he did on summer vacation
On July 26, Lutkenhaus won the U.S. outdoor 800-meter title in 1:43.48, finishing more than a second clear of runner-up Wes Ferguson after breaking away over the final 250 meters. LetsRun clocked his closing 200 at 25.32 and called it the largest winning margin at the U.S. championships since 2014.
The title completed something no one his age had business doing: sweeping the U.S. indoor and outdoor 800-meter championships in a single season, at 17.
Earlier in the summer he ran the fastest outdoor 800 of 2026 and beat an Olympic silver medalist at the Oslo Diamond League. As a junior, he set the under-18 world record.
