Another unexpected release was that of Jaydon Blue, a fifth-round pick in 2025, who did not gain the confidence of the coaching staff. Following his release, Blue signed with the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer emphasized the difficult nature of these decisions, highlighting the human aspect involved in roster cuts. However, he reiterated that such choices must align with the team's broader vision. Schottenheimer's approach marks a shift from previous years, where talent often took precedence.
This season, he has been clear about the need for players to step up, as evidenced by the promotion of Malik Davis to the RB2 position over both Blue and Phil Mafah, who also did not meet expectations.
In addition to Milton's release, Schottenheimer opted for Sam Howell as the backup quarterback instead of Milton, indicating a preference for Howell's talent and reliability. Cowboys insider Bobby Belt noted that Milton's focus may have contributed to his departure from the team.
The Cowboys also made significant changes on the defensive side, moving away from the traditional need for a standout player, often referred to as a 'war daddy.' This shift follows the trade of Micah Parsons. The defense, now under first-year coordinator Christian Parker, will focus on a collective effort rather than relying on a single star.
