The Houston Texans have announced that they will not extend contract negotiations with quarterback C.J. Stroud into the upcoming season. General manager Nick Caserio stated that if an agreement is not finalized before the team's season opener against Buffalo on September 13, all discussions will be postponed until next offseason.
Stroud, who was selected second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, has already had his fifth-year option picked up by the Texans, ensuring he remains under team control through 2027. Caserio had previously mentioned at the start of training camp that there was a possibility of reaching an extension, but it appears that a deal is not close at this time.
The 24-year-old quarterback has a record of 28 wins and 18 losses, leading the Texans to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons. In 2025, he achieved a career-best completion rate of 64% as the Texans finished with a 12-5 record and advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs.
However, Stroud faced challenges during a postseason loss to New England, where he threw five interceptions in a 28-16 defeat.
