The Houston Texans have officially signed defensive tackle Junior Tafuna to their practice squad, as reported by Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle on September 2. The announcement was made via the team's social media account, which included a graphic celebrating Tafuna's return to the franchise.
Tafuna, who stands 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 305 pounds, initially joined the Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2025. He played his rookie season with the team but was waived on August 5. The New York Jets claimed him the following day, but he was released during their roster cutdown.
Now back in Houston, Tafuna is expected to provide additional depth for a team aiming for a Super Bowl. During his collegiate career at Utah, he recorded 108 combined tackles, 7.5 sacks, and notable defensive stats including 15 tackles for loss, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble.
While some analysts have pointed out that Tafuna may lack certain traits typically sought in interior defenders, his athleticism and ability to handle double teams have drawn interest. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlien noted that Tafuna has shown potential, particularly in early-down situations, though his overall ceiling may be limited.
