Milton joined the Cowboys in April 2025 after a trade with the New England Patriots, which involved a fifth-round pick for 2025. Earlier on the same day, the Cowboys claimed running back Emari Demercado from the Kansas City Chiefs off waivers, and Milton's release was a corresponding move to make room for Demercado on the 53-man roster.
In three preseason games for the Cowboys in 2026, Milton completed 29 of 43 passes, totaling 378 yards and three touchdowns without any interceptions. He also contributed with 12 rushing attempts for 14 yards and one rushing touchdown.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer had expressed confidence in Milton's abilities, noting a conversation where Milton asserted his belief in himself despite the challenges of learning the team's complex offensive system.
Milton mentioned that he felt more comfortable with the Cowboys' offense after a full season and a second training camp, stating that he had gained a better understanding of the playbook. He acknowledged that decisions regarding the backup quarterback position were beyond his control, focusing instead on executing plays and ensuring the offense was functioning well.
