Federal firefighter grant sends $1.55 million to the Fort Worth Fire Department, the largest of five North Texas awards

FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grants program awarded $2,574,956 to five North Texas fire departments, and Fort Worth's $1,550,695 is about 60% of the total, Sen. John Cornyn's office said.

The Fort Worth Fire Department has been awarded $1,550,695 through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grants program, according to a statement from U.S. Sen. John Cornyn's office released Thursday.

Fort Worth's award is the biggest of five grants to North Texas fire departments named in the statement. Together the five come to $2,574,956, so Fort Worth's share is about 60% of the total.

The five awards

  • Fort Worth Fire Department: $1,550,695
  • Cooper Fire Department: $807,272
  • Van Alstyne Fire Department: $80,511
  • Denison Fire Department: $74,478
  • Krum Fire Department: $62,000

FEMA announced the awards, Cornyn's office said. The senator's statement described the program in broad terms, saying the money is meant to help departments recruit, train and keep emergency personnel, run fire prevention efforts in their communities, respond to emergencies and replace or improve equipment.

The statement did not say what the Fort Worth department or any of the other four departments plans to buy or fund with its award, and it did not give a timeline for spending the money.

"These resources will provide critical support to fire departments and equip our heroes with the tools needed to continue saving lives," Cornyn, a Texas Republican, said in the statement.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program is separate from FEMA's SAFER program, which pays part of the cost of hiring firefighters. Several North Texas cities have pursued SAFER money this fall; those awards are not part of this list.
