The Texas Rangers announced roster moves ahead of their matchup against the Detroit Tigers at Globe Life Field. The team activated right-handed pitcher Chris Martin from the 15-day injured list and placed right-hander Jakob Junis on the same list due to a right hip impingement. The Junis placement is retroactive to July 1.
Martin, 40, had been sidelined for the last 30 games with a right shoulder impingement. He participated in an injury rehabilitation assignment with the Double-A Frisco team on Wednesday at Riders Field. During that outing, he pitched a scoreless first inning, striking out two batters on 14 pitches, 10 of which were strikes.
This marks Martin’s 11th season in Major League Baseball. He has appeared in 12 games for Texas this year, recording a 1-1 record with a 7.84 earned run average. His statistics include nine earned runs over 10.1 innings, seven strikeouts, and two walks. His previous appearance occurred on May 30 against Kansas City, where he allowed one hit, two runs, one home run, and one walk in one inning of work.
Martin’s return will make him the 13th pitcher aged 40 or older to play for the Rangers. He will be the first to do so since Max Scherzer appeared twice during the 2024 season.
Junis, 33, last pitched on Monday against Cleveland. He allowed one earned run on two hits and recorded one strikeout over one inning in a 6-3 loss to the Guardians. This season, he has a 1-1 record with five saves and a 2.80 ERA in 31 games and one start. He has issued six walks and recorded 27 strikeouts over 35.1 innings.
Junis has entered games in the seventh inning or later in 29 of his 30 relief appearances this year, most frequently in the eighth inning. His 11 holds tie for 13th in the American League. His five saves are the second-most on the team, trailing only Ryan Latz. This is Junis’ first stint on the injured list since 2024, when he was with Milwaukee due to a right shoulder impingement.
