A fatal shooting occurred Saturday night in Fort Worth during a Fourth of July gathering near Lake Arlington. One individual died and another was hospitalized in an unknown condition after police say two men engaged in a physical altercation over a woman and exchanged gunfire.
The incident took place in the 5900 block of Wilbarger Street. A 911 caller reported that multiple people had been shot near the lake at approximately 8:15 p.m. When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they discovered the two men had shot each other during the fight, according to Officer Cynthia Wood, a police spokesperson.
The identity of the deceased person has not been released. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office is scheduled to handle the identification process.
Witnesses described the event as a Fourth of July party that included a DJ and a boxing match. According to accounts provided to the Star-Telegram, a dispute erupted outside the boxing ring among spectators. It was at that moment that gunshots were fired.
A.D. Brown, a witness at the scene, stated that he heard the shots and watched as people scattered and ducked for cover. Brown characterized the event as tragic but noted that such violence is not unusual during holiday celebrations, remarking that it happens annually.
Dozens of police units and ambulances responded to the homicide scene. Helicopters were observed overhead, and police indicated the area remained active late Saturday night. Officers blocked off nearby streets and detained some witnesses for questioning.
