Five Fort Worth City Council members have formally requested a moratorium on the construction of new data centers within the city limits. The request follows a zoning officials meeting on Wednesday, where proposed recommendations for data center zoning were rejected after a full day of resident testimony.
In a news release issued Thursday, the council members acknowledged that data centers can contribute to the local economy. However, they emphasized the need for caution regarding new development due to the concerns raised by the public. The officials cited several potential negative impacts on communities, including noise pollution, high water and energy consumption, and increased demand on local infrastructure.
The council members stated that getting regulations correct is more important than rushing the process. They are asking for additional time to conduct research and engage with stakeholders. The goal is to adopt rules that balance economic opportunities with the protection of residents, neighborhoods, natural resources, and critical infrastructure.
The Fort Worth City Council is expected to continue debating the issue during upcoming work sessions and meetings. It is not yet clear when a final vote on new zoning rules or the moratorium will take place.
