The City of Fort Worth filed a nuisance abatement lawsuit against the Central Motel on Tuesday, targeting the property located at 5800 E. Lancaster Ave. The legal action was announced during a press conference attended by Senior Assistant City Attorney Benjamin Sampract, Police Chief Eddie Garcia, and Police Officer Jentry Cotten.
The suit, filed under Chapter 125 of the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code, asks the court to declare the motel a common nuisance due to alleged persistent criminal activity. City officials state the goal is to obtain a permanent injunction that would require the property owner to implement measures to reduce crime, improve management practices, and enhance security.
According to the city, the Fort Worth Police Department has responded to numerous reported incidents at the location over the past year. The lawsuit alleges that the criminal activity includes prostitution, narcotics offenses, weapons violations, and a homicide investigation.
City Manager Jay Chapa emphasized that the municipality will not ignore chronic criminal behavior that threatens neighborhoods. He stated that property owners have a responsibility to operate their facilities in a way that does not permit persistent illegal activity. Chapa added that the city intends to use every lawful tool available to protect residents, support police officers, and hold property owners accountable.
Chapter 125 of the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code allows municipalities to seek court intervention when qualifying criminal activity habitually occurs at a property and the owner fails to take responsible steps to reduce it. Under this law, a court may order the closure of the property for up to one year in some cases.
