As the city of Fort Worth approaches the anniversary of the devastating 1980 heat wave, a local organization is highlighting the ongoing dangers of extreme temperatures through direct community assistance. June 26 marks the date of that historic record-breaking summer event, which remains one of the most significant periods of extreme heat in Texas history. While current temperatures have not yet matched those historic highs, the combination of heat and humidity continues to pose serious risks, particularly for seniors and individuals with chronic medical conditions.
For the past decade, Darryl Washington, president of The Washington International All-Purpose Foundation, has led efforts to provide window unit air conditioners to families across Fort Worth. Each summer, the foundation installs more than 50 units for residents in need, aiming to offer relief and help individuals remain safely in their homes during dangerous heat periods.
The initiative relies on support from the Fort Worth Police and Fire Department. These emergency services personnel assist with the installation process, ensuring that each unit is delivered to the correct resident, operates properly, and is installed safely.
The next scheduled installation will occur on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at 1109 East Morningside Drive in Fort Worth, Texas, 76104. This specific project will benefit an elderly woman, underscoring the critical need for cooling resources among medically vulnerable populations.
The foundation is currently seeking support from community members, businesses, and sponsors to help purchase additional air conditioning units for families in need. Those interested in donating or assisting with the initiative are encouraged to contact Darryl Washington directly at (817) 938-7464.
