Fort Worth is set to receive federal funding to support the construction of an overpass that will eliminate dangerous railroad crossings on the city’s north side. The total cost for the infrastructure improvement is estimated at $98 million.
The specific location for the new structure involves the intersection of Northeast 23rd Street, Decatur Avenue, and Samuels Avenue. According to a city press release issued on August 25, this initiative is part of a larger allocation of $755 million in federal grants awarded to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for various statewide projects.
The financial structure for the Fort Worth project divides the expenses among three parties. Kelly Porter, the city’s Assistant Director of Regional Transportation and Innovation, stated that the federal grant will cover 80% of the total cost. TxDOT is responsible for 10% of the funding, while the city of Fort Worth will contribute the remaining 10%.
The project aims to replace seven at-grade railroad crossings with a single above-grade crossing. This design allows vehicles to traverse the tracks without stopping for passing trains, thereby improving traffic flow and safety in the area. TxDOT will manage the design and delivery of the project in partnership with local officials.
