A new exhibit at Fort Worth City Hall showcases the local legend of the Lake Worth Monster, displaying items such as sketches, footprints, and a fur sample. The display aims to highlight the natural landscape that inspired the stories, according to Laura Veloz of the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge.
Veloz noted that the legend traces back to the summer of 1969 at Greer Island, part of the nature center. She described an initial encounter in a parking lot where a couple, John Richter and his spouse, were present. Veloz stated that a creature emerged from the water and attempted to pull the spouse.
Subsequent accounts expanded the lore, including a claim that the creature threw a tire an estimated 500 feet. Veloz recounted that witnesses described the entity pacing back and forth before launching the object. She emphasized that these details come from community reports rather than verified evidence.
For Danielle Bateni, a North Texas resident, the legend has personal significance. She recalled her older sister using the Goatman story to frighten her during elementary school. Bateni said her sister would threaten that the creature would come for her if she did not complete tasks or stay out of her room.
