A signed arrest warrant affidavit obtained by ABC affiliate WFAA and reported by ESPN says TCU wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma was hospitalized for three days with a brain bleed, a concussion and a strained AC joint after an alleged assault in the Walsh Athletic Complex locker room on Aug. 13.
Jacob Fields, then a TCU safety, is charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He turned himself in Sunday, his agent told ESPN's Mark Schlabach, and was released later that day on a $50,000 bond. Fields has not entered a plea and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. TCU dismissed him from the team Aug. 18, citing a violation of team rules.
According to the affidavit, Ezukanma was looking at his phone when Fields walked up and punched him in the forehead with a closed fist. Ezukanma fell to the floor. A teammate told police that Fields then kicked him in the head, ESPN and Dallas Sports Journal reported from the document.
What the affidavit attributes to witnesses and texts
Ezukanma told TCU police he lost consciousness and remembers only being in the training room afterward, asking teammates what had happened. A teammate told TCU's athletic trainer, according to the affidavit, "Dozie wasn't paying attention. [Fields] just hit him."
Ezukanma reported a severe headache and ringing in his ears. He was taken to a hospital that afternoon. An urgent CT scan showed a brain bleed; he was admitted and moved to intensive care.
A second scan showed the hematoma had grown, Dallas Sports Journal reported from the affidavit. A third scan the same night showed him stable. He was released Aug. 16.
A police sergeant who interviewed him Aug. 20 noted skin abrasions on his face where it had struck the floor.
Ezukanma told TCU police he believed Fields assaulted him because the two had been competing hard in camp and because Ezukanma had outperformed Fields in practice Aug. 12 - a belief attributed to Ezukanma in the affidavit, not an established finding of motive.
The affidavit states that Ezukanma provided text messages attributed to Fields. Fields wrote that he "made an emotional decision cause how I felt played the last few practices" and, according to the document, "I'll pay every hospital bill and then some to make this right." NBC 5 also reported a message reading, "Wish I could take all this back."
