Jerry Jones said the Cowboys could use additional help on defense and that he would be willing to spend money to improve the roster. His comments followed Dallas’ 37-20 victory over Washington ahead of the team’s Week 3 game against Baltimore in Brazil.
Jones said his earlier remark about an “old man with money” was made in a football context and reflected his optimism about the team. He also said Dallas still needs to run the ball more effectively.
Jones praised defensive tackles Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark, describing them as key players in the middle of the defense. He said Williams is among the league’s top players and that Clark has built a reputation through consistent high-level performance. Jones also said Williams was not dealing with an injury after appearing slow to rise on a couple of plays against Washington.
The Cowboys are scheduled to face the Ravens at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, where concerns about the playing surface have circulated. Coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team’s operations staff has been communicating with the league and that he has no concerns, adding that he expects the field to meet the league’s standards.
Dallas passed for 266 yards and ran for 66 yards against Washington. Javonte Williams finished with 30 yards on 12 carries. Schottenheimer said the game plan called for spreading out Washington’s defense and throwing the ball, though he did not expect the rushing total to be as low as 66 yards.
