The Dallas Cowboys have made a surprising move by releasing quarterback Joe Milton III from their 53-man roster to create space for running back Emari Demercado. This decision left Sam Howell as the backup quarterback heading into the regular season, allowing other teams the chance to claim Milton off waivers.
However, no teams opted to claim Milton, despite reported interest in signing him to their practice squads. Ultimately, Milton chose to return to the Cowboys and join their practice squad, which quarterback Dak Prescott views as a significant advantage for the team.
Prescott commented on Milton's return, emphasizing his positive impact on the team and the quarterback room. He noted Milton's growth during the offseason and expressed optimism for his future. "It means a lot.
Just me, personally, I thought he would’ve been picked up in the waivers or whatever it is. Fortunate for us, we got a hell of a player back and a guy that makes our room better," Prescott said.
Milton, who was a sixth-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in 2024, was traded to the Cowboys prior to the 2025 season. Although he demonstrated potential with his strong arm and athleticism, he struggled with consistency during his initial appearances. Last season, he played in four games, completing 15 of 24 passes for 183 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions.
