University of Houston football player Carmello Brooks appeared in court as he faces two criminal charges, including an allegation involving an assault on a pregnant person. Nariah Harley, who is identified as the woman involved in that allegation, told the judge she wants the case dismissed.
Harley said the incident began with an argument last week at Brooks' apartment. She told the court that Brooks asked her to leave several times before carrying her outside and placing her down. Harley also said Brooks contacted police because she had not left the apartment.
Brooks' attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said police body-camera footage and the 911 call are expected to be reviewed by prosecutors. He told the court he believes the recordings will support Brooks' account of the incident.
Brooks faces a separate criminal mischief charge related to an August incident in northwest Harris County. He is accused of damaging a door handle after a dispute involving another woman and her sister. Family members said Brooks and those women grew up together in Killeen and attended high school together.
Harley is also from Killeen and attends Texas Southern University. She told the court Brooks is the father of her baby and said she does not view herself as a victim. Wasserstein said Brooks remains suspended from the football team while the cases are pending and hopes Brooks will be permitted to attend classes. Further case details were not provided.
