Detroit Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty is seeking to build on his recent performance when he takes the mound against the Texas Rangers on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, Texas. Arlington is located approximately 13 miles east of Fort Worth.
Flaherty returned to the rotation after a brief absence due to a left peroneal strain. In his first outing since returning, he pitched five innings against the Houston Astros, striking out nine batters but requiring 94 pitches to complete the task. Although the Tigers lost the game 7-5 in extra innings, the outing marked only the second time this season that Flaherty has gone at least five innings without surrendering a run.
Flaherty acknowledged the need for more efficiency, noting that some at-bats extended longer than desired. His record stands at 1-8 with a 4.97 earned run average. He is scheduled to face the Rangers, a team he has a 1-1 record against in five career starts, with a 4.18 ERA.
The Tigers enter the series following a 10-4 loss to Texas on Thursday. Detroit trailed by five runs before Colt Keith and Hao-Yu Lee hit fifth-inning home runs to narrow the gap. Manager A.J. Hinch stated that the team gave itself a chance to compete but ultimately could not overcome the deficit. The loss ended a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees that preceded the current road trip.
The Rangers secured their seventh victory in their last eight games with the win over Detroit, matching their season-high run total in that contest. The team has held at least a share of the American League West lead for five consecutive days. Outfielder Evan Carter, who went 2-for-2 with a home run, emphasized the collective effort within the clubhouse.
