Babers Manor, the latest affordable housing project in Fort Worth, officially opened its doors to new residents. The development marks the third phase of the Stop Six Choice Neighborhood Initiative, a program that began in 2020. The site features 80 units, comprising a combination of townhouses and apartments, along with modern amenities.
Tashana Brown, a single mother and one of the first families to move in, shared her experience during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Brown, who grew up in the Stop Six neighborhood, described the move as a homecoming. She noted that her background as a child in a single-parent household influenced her desire to provide a stable environment for her own children.
Brown expressed satisfaction with her new two-bedroom, one-bathroom townhouse, stating that the space feels comfortable and personal.
The development was named in honor of Donald Babers, a late local administrator for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and a longtime advocate for public housing in Fort Worth. McKinley Dews, Babers’ grandson, spoke at the event, noting that his grandfather would have been pleased to see families flourishing in the new homes.
The project received support from a $35 million grant from HUD.
