Highway 287 remains shut down in both directions following a fatal collision involving a garbage truck and a bridge overpass in Fort Worth. The incident occurred Wednesday evening, prompting an extensive emergency response and significant traffic disruptions along the corridor.
The Fort Worth Fire Department received reports of the crash around 6 p.m. on the 3500 block of the highway, which is also identified as the Martin Luther King Freeway. Responders found the vehicle had struck multiple supporting pillars of the bridge structure located over Erath Street while exiting the roadway.
The impact ejected the truck driver from the cab. Emergency personnel pronounced the driver dead at the scene. The fire department confirmed that a passenger in the vehicle survived but was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
All lanes at the intersection of Highway 287 and Erath Street are closed as a result of the crash. Traffic management measures have been implemented for drivers using the freeway. Southbound motorists are directed to exit at Berry Street, while northbound traffic must use the Miller Street exit.
