Fort Worth ISD started the 2026-27 school year Wednesday morning with a district convocation at Dickies Arena, where 11,000 teachers gathered for the event. It was the first time the district held the gathering at that venue.
The event came as Fort Worth ISD begins its first semester operating under a state takeover. Superintendent Pete Licata, who was appointed by the Texas Education Agency, spoke to staff during the program. The agency also appointed a board of managers in place of the elected school board.
The convocation included music, games, cheering and dancing, with the district using the event to encourage staff at the start of the year. Licata wore a cowboy hat and addressed concerns tied to the coming school year.
The district has identified 19 campuses as ELEVATE campuses, a label for schools needing academic improvement. Those campuses have received additional attention, and some principal and teacher roles have changed.
Delain Sandifer, president of David K. Sellars Elementary School, told CBS News Texas the year is beginning with a positive outlook. "I'm excited, optimistic," Sandifer said. Sandifer also said there is uncertainty because the approach is new, while saying answers are available within the district.
