Alejandro Ponce is searching for answers after his son, Andrew Ponce, died during an encounter with Fort Worth police officers on Sunday morning. The father stated he wants to know the complete truth about the incident and has requested access to body-worn camera footage as permitted by law.
Fort Worth Police Chief Eddie Garcia provided initial details at the scene, describing a situation where a suspect allegedly kicked in an apartment door on the 9200 block of Renee Circle. Garcia said the individual assaulted someone inside before holding a knife to his own throat and refusing to follow officer commands.
The chief noted that the man continued to advance despite warnings and was subsequently shot. He was transported to a hospital but did not survive.
Alejandro Ponce, 44, of Johnson County, learned of his son’s death through his own efforts rather than official notification. He said he realized his youngest son had missed a scheduled meeting at church and used phone tracking technology to locate him. The signal led him to the Fort Worth Police Department records division.
Upon arriving, Alejandro spoke with a detective who directed him to another official. That person informed him that his son was involved in an incident where police had shot him. Alejandro described feeling immediate dread upon receiving the news and noted there was no time for grief before he went to the county morgue to identify Andrew Isaiah Ponce.
