The Detroit Tigers are preparing to face the Texas Rangers on Saturday, July 4, in an attempt to even their current series. The two teams will meet at Globe Life Field in Arlington, which is located approximately 13 miles east of Fort Worth. This matchup follows a Thursday night contest where Texas defeated Detroit with a final score of 10-4, ending Detroit's three-game winning streak.
Detroit’s pitching staff struggled significantly in the previous game. Framber Valdez allowed numerous runs, marking the second consecutive start where he faced heavy offensive pressure. The relief pitchers also failed to contain the Texas lineup, contributing to a large deficit that the Tigers' offense could not overcome despite some productive at-bats.
Before this series, Detroit took a day off on Friday. The team now turns its attention to right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty for the upcoming start. Flaherty has shown improved performance recently, posting a 2.50 earned run average and a 1.72 fielding independent pitching statistic across four starts in June. However, he has not been able to pitch five innings in any game since May.
Flaherty’s most recent outing involved five scoreless innings, during which he allowed two hits and issued three walks while striking out nine batters. Although he performed well, the Tigers lost that game 7-5 in extra innings. This was one of only two scoreless starts for Flaherty this season. His other scoreless effort occurred on June 2, when he pitched five innings against the Tampa Bay Rays in a game Detroit won 8-0.
The Rangers will counter with right-handed pitcher Kumar Rocker. Rocker, 26, is in his third season in the major leagues. He finished May with mixed results but secured his fifth quality start of the year by pitching six shutout innings against the Toronto Blue Jays. In that game, he allowed four hits and one walk while striking out five batters. The Rangers won that contest 3-2, leaving Rocker with a no-decision.
