The second week of the Texas high school football season begins Friday with five notable games in the Fort Worth area. The Star-Telegram has identified these contests as key matchups to follow.
Southlake Carroll (No. 6 Class 6A) travels to face North Crowley (No. 4 Class 6A) at Crowley ISD Stadium at 7 p.m. Both teams secured opening-day victories last week. Southlake Carroll rallied from a 27-point deficit to defeat Jenks, 34-33. North Crowley shut out Aledo, 26-0, limiting the Bearcats to minus-17 rushing yards and 174 total yards.
The Dragons may rely on wide receiver Brody Knowles, who recorded seven catches for 176 yards and two touchdowns in his debut, alongside quarterback Hudson Tomcheck. Tomcheck completed 20 of 27 passes for 318 yards and two scores. North Crowley’s defense features Brayden Cunningham, who returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown against Aledo.
The Dragons struggled to run the ball last week, gaining only 19 yards on 28 carries.
In Burleson, Centennial plays Burleson at 7 p.m. in "The Battle of the Boot." Centennial leads the series 8-6 and won three straight before losing last season. The Spartans defeated Weatherford, 31-21, while Burleson lost to Keller, 55-14. Centennial quarterback Jonas Kennedy threw for 146 yards and two touchdowns in his first game.
Mansfield meets Mansfield Summit at Newsom Stadium at 7 p.m. for the 23rd meeting between the rivals. Mansfield leads the series 12-10 but lost its opener to Arlington Martin, 38-35. Summit also lost its opener, falling to Red Oak, 20-15.
Summit coach Channon Hall aims to slow a Mansfield offense that gained 392 total yards last week, with Raymond Weaver rushing for 103 yards on 13 carries.
