Twenty-five years after Islamic extremists hijacked four commercial airplanes, killing nearly 3,000 people in the deadliest terror attacks in history, communities across North Texas are holding ceremonies to remember those lost. The attacks involved two planes striking the World Trade Center towers, one hitting the Pentagon, and a fourth crashing in a Pennsylvania field following passenger resistance.
In Grapevine, the city is organizing a Day of Remembrance ceremony at the Texan Trail near the 9/11 Flight Crew Memorial just after 7:30 a.m. on Friday. A live stream will be available on the City of Grapevine Facebook page for those unable to attend in person.
Following the service, MARCH 455 will begin, featuring an escort from local fire and police departments leading 455 uniformed first responders on a 1.3-mile march through downtown to Peace Plaza.
The march honors the 455 firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders who died on September 11, 2001. The route starts at the memorial, proceeds down Wall Street and Historic Downtown Main Street, and ends at Peace Plaza.
Grapevine High School is also holding its seventh annual 9/11 Tribute Stair Climb at Mustang Panther Stadium. Wrestlers are partnering with first responders from Grapevine, Colleyville, and Euless to climb 1,980 inclined steps, replicating the 110 flights inside the Twin Towers. Many participants will wear weighted vests or backpacks to simulate the gear carried by responders.
On this 25th anniversary, names of victims will be read during the event.
