Fort Worth is encouraging residents to take steps to protect migrating birds as millions pass through Texas this fall. Officials noted that artificial light can draw these birds off their intended paths, but simple actions can help them stay on course.
The city recommends that residents turn off or dim outdoor lights between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Additionally, closing blinds or curtains can reduce the amount of light shining through windows. Limiting landscape lighting that illuminates trees, gardens, and other resting areas is also advised. Using timers or motion sensors ensures that outdoor lights are only active when necessary.
Fort Worth officials stated that participation is not limited to those living or working downtown. Reducing unnecessary light at night throughout the city helps migrating birds maintain their trajectory. The city is asking for community-wide cooperation to support these seasonal travelers.
