Kevin Vasquez, a 24-year-old business and entrepreneurship student at the University of Texas at Arlington, has launched a weekly initiative designed to encourage residents to disconnect from digital devices and engage in direct conversation. The program, known as Walk and Talk, takes place on the Katy Trail in Arlington, which is located approximately 13 miles east of Fort Worth.
Vasquez stated that his goal is to eventually open a cafe and restaurant where he can host similar community-building events. The concept originated from personal experiences, beginning with walks taken with his cousin Natalie before work. After that arrangement ended due to a job change, a friend from his church invited him to Thursday night walks in January. The deep connection formed during those walks led Vasquez to propose a similar event for his church’s young adult group.
An initial invitation to his Sunday class yielded only one attendee. Undeterred, Vasquez posted about the idea online, including a TikTok video that received approximately 30,000 views. This digital outreach resulted in about 25 people attending the first organized gathering. Three months later, participation has expanded significantly, with more than 250 individuals now involved in the group.
The events are held every Friday, provided weather conditions allow. Participants are randomly paired with strangers for the walk, with the hope that these interactions will develop into lasting friendships. Vasquez noted that the group has witnessed numerous instances of people connecting, though he acknowledged that many such moments likely go unreported.
