American Airlines has added an app feature that lets eligible AAdvantage members request a different seat type and have their reservation updated automatically when a qualifying seat opens.
Travelers can opt in after booking and choose preferences such as a window or aisle. American says the tool is available until 24 hours before departure for single-passenger reservations with an assigned seat.
Changes stay within the existing cabin, and the app notifies the passenger when it makes a switch. It will not move travelers into a more expensive paid seat or add a seat charge.
