The first quarter looked like the TCU that flew to Dublin with a new quarterback and a redesigned run game. Jeremy Payne ripped a 48-yard gain on the opening series. Kyle Lemmermann tied it from 31. Ed Small's 33-yard punt return set up Jon Denman's 2-yard score. Ten minutes into the Aer Lingus College Football Classic, the Horned Frogs led 10-3 at Aviva Stadium.
They did not score again.
North Carolina won 15-10 on a wet Saturday that erased TCU streaks built on explosive starts and left Sonny Dykes sorting fourth-down decisions that came up empty. Harvard transfer Jaden Craig went 20-of-32 for 175 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions in his first Power Four start.
Both athletic departments listed 281 total yards for TCU against 322 for the Tar Heels; UNC led 20-17 in first downs even while trailing in time of possession, 33:01 to 26:58.
Payne early, Belichick late
Payne finished with 142 yards on 25 carries in Gordon Sammis' wide-zone scheme. The Associated Press noted he had 111 rushing yards by half and only 26 after, the clearest sign Bill Belichick's front had closed the edge.
"Once we kind of got settled down a little bit on the outside runs ... we kind of forced him to cut back and those guys did a good job inside," Belichick said. "They hit the quarterback, they didn't really let him step up in the pocket and throw much."
Craig's night mirrored that squeeze. Small caught nine for 65 yards, but the intermediate game never replaced what Payne lost after the break. Melkart Abou Jaoude's strip-sack of Craig in the third (Jaylen Harvey recovering at the TCU 31) set up Aeron Burrell's 28-yard field goal for the final margin.
Xavier Lewis had 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Max Carroll led TCU with nine tackles and two fumble recoveries, the first Frog with multiple recoveries in a game since at least 1995, per TCU athletics. Ansel Din-Mbuh added two sacks.
Billy Edwards Jr. went 16-of-28 for 232 yards; Jaylen McGill's 9-yard run was Carolina's only score from scrimmage.
Fourth downs and 89 yards of flags
A safety made it 12-10 late in the second when a snap sailed over punter Jon Hoyet, who kicked the ball out of the back of the end zone. From there, every TCU drive lived in the shadow of that early 10.
Twice deep in Tar Heel territory, Dykes kept the offense on the field. Payne was stuffed on fourth-and-1 from the 5. With 4:05 left, Craig rolled left and threw incomplete on fourth-and-2 from the 10, a play the AP noted may have offered a running lane.
After the first stop, Burrell missed a 42-yarder and TCU got another red-zone chance; after the second, UNC ran out the clock.
