Students at Fort Worth ISD's Meacham Middle School will spend the next several weeks in a different building after Thursday's downpour damaged their campus.

Superintendent Peter Licata said in a letter to families that heavy rain left the building "unsafe for occupancy," FOX 4 reported. Meacham was already closed Thursday and Friday because of flooding.

Where classes move

The school is relocating to the Briscoe Elementary School building, which has sat empty since the district closed that campus at the end of the 2025-26 school year because of declining enrollment. Briscoe is roughly 20 minutes south of Meacham.

There will be no classes for Meacham students on Monday, Oct. 5, while staff move into the temporary site. Classes are scheduled to resume at Briscoe on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

According to the district, students keep their current teachers, courses and programs, and Meacham's bell schedule stays the same. The school's principal has said students can ride buses from the Meacham campus to Briscoe during the move.

"The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and we cannot reopen the building until we are confident that the campus is fully safe and operational," Licata said in a statement reported by CBS News Texas.

A campus already under construction

Meacham is in the middle of a renovation funded by the district's 2021 bond program, with work expected to wrap up in the second quarter of 2027. Repairs from the storm damage are expected to take several weeks.

Parents raise the distance

Roxanne Martinez, the elected trustee for District 9, has no voting power while the state oversees the district, but she told FOX 4 she is hearing from families. "To drive across town to Briscoe is a major concern for parents," she said, adding that only Briscoe had room for Meacham's more than 500 students.

Meacham parents are scheduled to meet at noon Saturday, Oct. 3, at Diamond Hill High School.
