Miro Heiskanen played more than half the game. In the final half-minute, he helped create the goal that kept Dallas alive.

Heiskanen picked up the secondary assist on Tyler Seguin's tip-in at 19:30 of the third period as the Stars forced overtime before falling 2-1 in a shootout to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday at PPG Paints Arena.

ESPN's box lists Heiskanen with one assist, a plus-1 and 30:24 of ice time - the most of any skater in the game - along with a delay-of-game minor in the second period.

Jason Robertson took the shot Seguin redirected past Arturs Silovs with 29.1 seconds left, wiping out Connor Dewar's earlier third-period goal. Jake Oettinger had blanked Pittsburgh for more than three periods before Dewar ended a 188:52 individual shutout streak.

Heavy minutes in a low-event road game

The first 40 minutes produced no goals and plenty of blocked shots. Dallas finished with 25 blocks to Pittsburgh's 15, per the box. Heiskanen's workload covered both special teams and late-game pushes: when Dallas needed a tying chance with the goalie likely coming out soon, he was on for the sequence that produced Robertson's shot and Seguin's tip.

Pittsburgh coach Dan Muse said his club was "on the same page" after recent losses, stuck to its plan and got the shootout win. Stars coach Glen Gulutzan pointed to Oettinger giving Dallas a chance and said the skaters needed more offense in front of him.

Avalanche next on a back-to-back

In the shootout, Seguin and Wyatt Johnston scored for Dallas; Ben Kindel, Sidney Crosby and Rickard Rakell scored for Pittsburgh. Silovs stopped 24 shots in regulation and overtime. Dallas dropped to 2-2-1.

Heiskanen's night was not flashy - no shots on goal in more than 30 minutes - but the secondary assist on the equalizer and the ice-time load define how Dallas stayed within a tip of regulation. The Stars host Colorado on Tuesday to open a back-to-back against the Avalanche, another night that will ask the same minutes from the top pair.
