Jake Hummel Placed on Injured Reserve, Texans Linebacker Depth Tested

The Houston Texans have announced that linebacker Jake Hummel has been placed on injured reserve ahead of their Week 3 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Hummel has been dealing with a persistent groin injury, which has kept him out of practice since last week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

This move means Hummel will miss at least the next four games, including the upcoming match against the Colts, a home game against the Dallas Cowboys, and road games against the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars in London. Prior to this announcement, it was already known from the Texans' injury report that Hummel would be sidelined for at least one more game.

Hummel's placement on injured reserve adds to the Texans' linebacker woes, as four players from this position group are now on injured reserve or the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Veteran linebacker E.J. Speed is out for the season due to a quad injury sustained in the offseason, while K.C.

Ossai was placed on IR before the season began. Additionally, Henry To'oTo'o was added to IR following a shoulder injury in the first game of the season against the Buffalo Bills.

While Hummel’s absence is significant, he has primarily contributed on special teams, playing only 150 defensive snaps in his career. In contrast, Speed and To'oTo'o have been key defensive players when healthy.

With Hummel out, the Texans will have five healthy linebackers on their 53-man roster, including Jamal Hill, who was recently promoted from the practice squad. The other linebackers include Azeez Al-Shaair, Jake Hansen, and rookies Wade Woodaz and Aiden Fisher, who are expected to see increased playing time in Hummel’s absence.

The Texans may also consider signing or elevating another linebacker from their practice squad, which currently includes Kenneth Murray, a former Dallas Cowboys player. However, he will not be available for the upcoming game against the Colts. The situation regarding the linebacker position will be closely monitored as the team navigates through the next few weeks without Hummel.
