C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans have stopped contract negotiations for now and plan to revisit a long-term extension after the 2026 season, according to a report published Sept. 12 by sports.yahoo.com.
The sides had tried to reach an agreement before the regular season began, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on X, citing himself and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Stroud remains under contract through the 2027 season through the NFL’s fifth-year option, but his status beyond that season remains unresolved.
The decision shifts the focus to the 2026 season while leaving open the possibility of a future multiyear agreement. The report said both Stroud and the Texans remain interested in reaching a long-term deal.
Reported figures connected to the negotiations have ranged from approximately $50 million to $55 million annually, with a potential target near $70 million also discussed during the offseason. The actual figures considered by each side were not provided.
