Texas Christian University (TCU) has reinstated media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, concluding a dispute that arose after the newspaper reported on an altercation in the locker room involving former TCU safety Jacob Fields and wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma.
The conflict began when the Star-Telegram reported on the incident, which took place on August 13, leading to Fields' dismissal from the team and his subsequent arrest for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. Ezukanma reportedly suffered significant injuries, including a brain bleed and concussion, and was hospitalized for three days.
TCU stated that both parties engaged in "productive discussions" and agreed to move forward. The initial decision to revoke the Star-Telegram's credentials had drawn attention, especially as more serious details about the altercation emerged. The newspaper had cited an unnamed source suggesting that Fields was targeted by teammates, which was later revised to remove implications of bullying.
Athletic director Mike Buddie expressed concerns that the reporting created a harmful narrative, resulting in threats against Fields and his family. Following the revocation, the Star-Telegram was barred from covering TCU athletic events, including the season opener against North Carolina in Dublin, although their reporter still managed to cover the game without official credentials.
