George Odum has received another opportunity with the Houston Texans after the team elevated the veteran safety and special teams player from its practice squad for its game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 reported the move on X on Sept. 19, citing a league source. Odum previously recorded a tackle against the Buffalo Bills while playing 71% of Houston’s special teams snaps, according to the report.
Odum is in his ninth NFL season and has played 109 games, including 12 starts. The report lists him with 209 tackles, four forced fumbles, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Another set of career figures included in Wilson’s report lists 205 tackles.
The former undrafted player has earned All-Pro recognition from the Colts and 49ers, receiving First Team honors with one team and Second Team honors with the other. Houston retained him for his special teams experience even though Caleb Bullock and Reed Blankenship are healthy. The Texans also dealt with multiple injuries at the position last season.
Pro Football Focus ranked Odum 26th among 29 Texans special teams players for the team’s season-opening loss to Buffalo, which Houston lost 36-31. The report noted that the grading system provides an overall mark rather than separate grades for each special teams phase. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans had previously praised Odum’s preseason playmaking while players were competing for roster spots.
