Baylor University quarterback DJ Lagway is currently considered day-to-day due to an ankle injury as the team prepares for its Week 2 matchup against Prairie View A&M on Saturday. Head coach Dave Aranda indicated that Lagway's status will be assessed following practice.
In his debut with Baylor, Lagway completed 27 of 54 passes for 333 yards, along with two touchdowns and one interception, in a narrow 17-16 defeat against Auburn. The Bears were unable to convert a two-point conversion attempt late in the game, which contributed to their loss.
Auburn head coach Alex Golesh praised Lagway's resilience, noting his toughness in continuing to play despite the injury. "The quarterback is a tough kid," Golesh remarked, emphasizing Lagway's ability to withstand physical challenges during the game.
Lagway, who previously played for the University of Florida, transferred to Baylor after two seasons with the Gators. He initially entered the transfer portal following the firing of head coach Billy Napier. During his time at Florida, Lagway was regarded as a promising talent, ranked as the No. 3 player in his class.
He had a notable performance in his freshman year, leading the Gators to a 5-1 record in the final six games of the season.
Despite high expectations heading into the last season, Lagway faced challenges, including injuries and a lack of support from teammates. He finished the season with 2,264 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions, as Florida ended with a disappointing 4-8 record.
